Details

This SATYAJIT RAY Centenary commemorative publication presents over 100 rare photographs of the maestro, capturing his various expressions and moments, at work and repose—most of these pictures, rare and largely unseen. The black-and-white film medium lends the images an aristocracy befitting to the subject. The insightful preface, essays and fine details, along with the words of Ray himself, make this edition a veritable treasure trove of frozen frames and memories. The Photographer TARAPADA BANERJEE’s journey with Satyajit Ray began in the late 1950s and continued for over three decades until Ray’s demise in 1992. Along with his regular assignments as a press photographer of renown, Banerjee was frequently present at Ray’s shootings and personal spheres. With the camera, he was agile and indomitable. The result was an extraordinary set of candid photographs—rare portraits and moments, a fine selection of which is curated in this limited-print, special-edition book. Tarapada Banerjee, who lives in Calcutta, has held solo exhibitions in this city, in Bombay and in Paris. He has received many accolades and awards from UNESCO, WHO, Japan Airlines, World Press Photo and Holland Foundation. He was a member of the Royal Photographic Society of London
